PenTile RGBW display responsive to vision
Taiwanese display manufacturer Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) has completed development of a 2-inch LCD (QVGA resolution) featuring Clairvoyante PenTile RGBW technology. According to the developer, it is thanks to this technology that the novelty is distinguished by increased brightness and reduced power consumption. Clairvoyante estimates that the product consumes half the power of a traditional LCD.
The control circuit uses the SW1605 microcircuit, manufactured by the Korean company Silicon Works under license from Clairvoyante. Its interface is compatible with standard control circuits, the single-box design is attractive in terms of saving PCB space, and the use of PenTile RGBW technology has reduced framebuffer memory by a third and reduced the number of connections.
PenTile RGBW technology is based on human vision. Instead of the usual matrix formed by groups of three subpixels, the new matrix contains twice the number of vertical rows, with the green and red subpixels of each column alternating with each other. This allows each of them to be used as the center of a “colored dot” formed on the screen. According to Clairvoyante, the resulting effect is equivalent to a fourfold increase in resolution. To increase brightness and expand the color range, PenTile RGBW additionally uses white subpixels.
