Panda Software: Virus & Intrusion Weekly Report (Week 47 of 2021)

Panda Software has released another report that will look at two new worms – Sober.AH and Mops.A-, Trojan -Mitglieder.GB- and potentially dangerous program -SpyMon-.

Millions of Sober-infected messages were sent around the world this week.AH. The reasons for this massive spread, in particular, lie in the use of social engineering methods by attackers to attract the attention of users. Among the ‘baits’ used by Sober.AH were emails posing as a video featuring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, as well as warnings from the FBI or CIA about access to illegal Internet sites.

Sober.AH are distributed by email in a message containing a compressed zip file. When the user runs this file, the worm infects the computer and displays a false error message. If the recipient’s address ends in: de (Germany), ch (Switzerland), at (Austria) or li (Liechtenstein), then the message is received in German. In other cases, letters come in English.

Sober.AH kills several processes, including security programs, in the latter case, displaying the message “No viruses, Trojans or Spyware found! Status OK “. It also creates several files including SERVICES.EXE, CSRSS.EXE and SMSS.EXE, which is a copy of the worm. It masquerades as a legitimate Windows process so as not to arouse suspicion among power users checking the list of processes.

The next threat we’ll look at today is the Mitglieder Trojan.GB, which began to spread rapidly and deposed Sober.AH at the top of the Panda ActiveScan Top Threats Ranking.

Mitglieder.GB does not have built-in distribution facilities and therefore must be manually distributed. Samples received so far came in the form of emails with various headers and a ZIP attachment. When this Trojan is launched, it opens the image viewer selected in Windows and displays the Windows logo. Once installed on your computer, Mitglieder.GB tries to download a malicious file from various web pages every four hours using a PHP script.

Second worm in today’s report – Mops.A, distributed via Yahoo Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger. It does this by sending itself in messages containing a link. If the user clicks on the link, a self-extracting RAR file containing several files belonging to Mops is downloaded.A, Sdbot.FAR and toolbars for Internet Explorer.

Today’s report concludes with ‘Potentially Malicious Software’ SpyMon, Which Helps Remotely Control Your Computer. In t.h. allows an attacker to record keystrokes pressed, view running prose and make a screenshot.
