“Photoforum-2021”, Panasonic press conference

On April 14, 2021, within the framework of the Sixth International Exhibition “Photoforum-2021”, Panasonic held a press conference dedicated to the new models of the Lumix line of digital cameras. These are devices released and those that are supposed to be released in 2021: Lumix LS2, LZ3, LZ5, FX01, TZ1, DMC-L1 interchangeable-lens reflex camera.

The Lumix camera features a Leica lens and OIS system.I.S., allowing you to shoot at shutter speeds 2-3 stops longer than is possible when shooting handheld (without a tripod) and without stabilization. In new cameras, this optical-mechanical stabilization is supplemented with a “matrix-processor” mode – “HIGH SENSITIVITY” mode (the sensitivity is equal to. ISO 1600). The “HIGH SENSITIVITY” mode is actually a special scene mode and assumes that the print size will not be larger than 10×15 cm. But even with such a limitation, the sensitivity of 1600 is still an unusual characteristic for compact cameras with small matrices (1 / 2.5 inches or less) and a relatively high resolution (over 5 megapixels).
All new cameras are structurally interesting. But, of course, special attention should be paid to the TZ1 and DMC-L1.

The name of the TZ1 encodes its purpose – a camera for a tourist (The Traveler Zoom). It is the smallest among those with a 10x zoom and 5 (or more) megapixel matrix. And this is fundamentally important for a tourist. The camera uses an optical system with a “broken optical axis” (press release). In this case, the lens has a focal length range of 5.2 – 52 mm (equivalent. 35-350mm), f / 2.8-f / 4.2 maximum aperture and optical image stabilization. LCD 2.5 ” diagonal. Sensitivity eq. 80-800 and “HIGH SENSITIVITY” (for 1 / 2.5 “die). And all this in a case measuring 112×58.1×40.2 mm and weighing 234 g.
The first 7.5MP DSLR Lumix DMC-L1 has not yet been “finally” released. A prototype was presented. Not only the firmware will change, but, possibly, the design.

Externally, the camera looks more like a rangefinder than a DSLR. The austere shapes and beautiful design will surely appeal to those who have shot with Leica before. The concept of the camera follows the canvas of Lumix digital cameras and the “4/3” system promoted by Olympus. So far, the only Leica D lens VARIO-ELMARIT 14-50 mm / f / 2.8-f / 3.5 is equipped with an optical stabilization system O.I.S. It can be replaced with any “4/3” lens from Olympus or other third-party manufacturers. The viewfinder is an optical SLR and its design with a “sideways” rotation of the optical axis (like in Olympus cameras) allows you to move away from the classic design of DSLRs towards more compact rangefinders. In addition, in the process of shooting, you can also use an electronic viewfinder-display (2.5 inches LCD) – LiveView mode (it is possible thanks to the Panasonic MOS matrix of the “Live MOS” type). At the same time, the shooting speed decreases slightly, since immediately before exposure, the mirror and the shutter still close the matrix in order for the autofocus sensors to work, and the matrix is ”zeroed”. Therefore, dynamic shooting and LiveView have little compatibility, but in studio shooting, LiveView and a large display will be very useful. As in Olympus cameras, an ultrasonic wave “cleaner” is installed on the DMC-L1 sensor.

Company representatives noted that Panasonic is not going to compete with Canon and Nikon in the sector of professional DSLRs. This gives reason to hope – the price of the camera will not be very high. At the same time, optical stabilization is the only lens that will be supplied with the camera at the time of sale, and the LiveView mode are features for which you should demand a higher price. And the buyer must be ready to give them away. The prototype buffer is not too big and only holds a few RAW shots in burst shooting. But this is just a prototype. Perhaps the first working samples will appear by the fall.
