A diamond for a digital signal processing dictatorship: Tensilica Diamond Standard 545CK
Digital signal processing, today, is present, perhaps, in all multimedia devices – from household audio and video equipment to personal computers. While a PC can rely on the power of its central processing unit, in more specialized devices, processing is assigned to digital signal processors (DSPs).
In the field of DSP, a notable event happened the other day. Tensilica is said to have “raised the bar to new heights” by introducing the most powerful licensed DSP core to date, the Diamond Standard 545CK. The results of the BDTI Benchmarks test, developed by Berkeley Design Technology (BDTI), allow us to talk about a performance record. Specifically, the BDTIsimMark2000 score of 3490 units achieved at 220 MHz is 30% higher than the achievement that existed until now set by the CEVA-X1620 DSP core. In addition, the Diamond Standard 545CK is about twice as economical in terms of energy consumption as any comparable offering that has passed BDTI testing.
Diamond Standard 545CK uses a very long instruction word (VLIW) architecture. 64-bit VLIW instructions can be used concurrently with 16/24-bit (Xtensa instruction set) so as not to “bloat” the code when parallel execution of instructions is impossible. Eight 16-bit multipliers can operate in single instruction multiple data (SIMD) mode using 16 160-bit vector registers.
The kernel is completed with software development tools (Xtensa Xplorer Diamond Edition (DE) SDK), including source code examples for various DSP functions and binaries. By the way, among the licensees of Tensilica is ATI.
