All the problems of small semiconductor circuits are in the surface

Semiconductor integration density doubles every 18 months, according to a law bearing the name of Intel founder Gordon Moore. This is achieved by reducing the size of the elements, however, new difficulties constantly arise along this path. One of these difficulties is an increase in the electrical resistance of a semiconductor, the thickness of which decreases along with a decrease in the size of the elements.

A recent study by scientists from the University of Wisconsin, who found a way to increase the electrical conductivity of thin layers of silicon by surface treatment, is devoted to solving this problem. It is also curious that scientists have found a threshold for the effect of dopants that determine the type of charge carriers in semiconductors (n or p) – with a silicon layer thickness of 200 nm or less, the concentration of dopants no longer affects the electrical conductivity. Instead, the surface quality begins to influence the conductivity.

In the course of their work, a group of scientists showed that if you clean silicon nanomembranes from oxides concentrated on the surface, the electrical conductivity increases 10 times. The thinner the membrane, the stronger the surface effect, so it is not surprising that cleaning the surface of 10nm samples resulted in a million-fold increase in electrical conductivity.

As usual, this discovery was made by accident. The group of researchers did not work purposefully on increasing the electrical conductivity of silicon membranes, but was engaged in cleaning the surface to improve the quality of images obtained by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM).
