Intel and ST take first step towards NOR flash standardization

Intel and STMicroelectronics announced the joint creation of a standard flash memory subsystem that OEMs can easily, and most importantly, quickly integrate into off-the-shelf telephones.

According to Intel, citing iSuppli data, 92.8% of the memory embedded in phones is now based on the NOR architecture. The joint share of Intel and ST in this market reaches 40%.

Based on the developed joint specifications, a 512 Mbit microcircuit has already been created, made using multilevel cell technology (MLC) in compliance with the standards of the 90-nm process technology. This chip will be supplied by both Intel and ST (MCP flash + RAM also appeared in the portfolio of the latter). In the future, based on the same specifications, microcircuits created using 65-nm and 45-nm technologies will be proposed.

As Digi Times reports, also referring to iSuppli, the agreement between Intel and ST can be considered a landmark – talks about how to somehow standardize the “menagerie” of various solutions available on the market have been going on for a long time. Curious, but true: although NOR flash has been available on the market longer than NAND, its spread has not gone so quickly – again, due to the lack of uniform standards or such market leaders who would control more than half of the shipments.

By the way, just two weeks ago Intel announced a joint venture with Micron – IM Flash, signaling its intention to launch an offensive in the NAND flash market. Obviously, the company’s intentions to further strengthen its position in the NOR flash market are no less serious.

Based on materials from Intel and The Digi Times.
