Changing the stepping of Intel processors, a year later ..

Intel announces stepping change for Socket 478 Pentium 4 / Celeron processors from E-0 to G-1. As in previous cases of stepping changes, the new processors are compatible at the contact level with E-0 chips (by the way, E-0 stepping was introduced into use almost exactly a year ago).

Stepping change applies to Pentium 4 3.0 / 3.20 / 3.40 GHz, Celeron 310 (2.13 GHz) / 315 (2.26 GHz) / 320 (2.40 GHz) / 325 (2.53 GHz) / 330 (2.66 GHz) / 335 (2.80 GHz) / 340 (2.93 GHz) / 345 (3.06 GHz) / 350 (3.20 GHz).

Together with stepping, the CPU ID value will change, from 0xF41h to 0xF49h. BIOS firmware update will be required and new S-Specs will be available to ensure motherboard compatibility with new processors.

It’s also worth noting that G-1 stepped processors are RoHS compliant – no longer use lead. In addition, the number of passive elements on the Celeron processor case has been changed (a resistor has been added, see the picture above).
