Dell, EMC, Intel and LSI Logic aim to standardize external storage

Four companies announced the creation of the Storage Bridge Bay Working Group (SBB), a non-profit organization dedicated to standardizing entry-level external storage. SBB is expected to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies such as iSCSI (Internet small computer systems interface), SAS (serial attached SCSI), archive libraries and virtual tape drives.

The founders of the group were joined by other well-known participants in the external storage market: Adaptec, AMCC, Aristos Logic, Astute Networks, Dot Hill Systems Corp., Neterion, RASILIENT Systems, Seagate and Xyratex.

In the first phase, SBB will reportedly focus on the development and distribution of specifications for standardizing external storage disk subsystem technologies.

Specifically, the requirements for the mechanical and electrical interface between storage arrays and controller cards will be defined, which will identify the array type: JBOD, RAID, iSCSI, Fiber Channel SAN and NAS. As a result, any controller built according to SBB specifications can be connected and used as part of SBB-compatible storage.
