Kingmax plans to release 2GB SO-DIMM DDR2-533
According to the source, Kingmax, which just yesterday announced the release of budget SO-DIMM memory modules for notebooks based on the Sonoma platform, is ready to start shipping “non-budget” SO-DIMMs with a capacity of 2 GB in January 2021. 2 GB modules will be designed to work in systems with support for DDR2-533 MHz, while DDR2-667 SO-DIMM-strips from Kingmax will be available only in the version up to 1 GB.
Currently, according to Kingmax, the share of DDR2-533 shipments is 95% of the total number of modules sold by the company (data for the third quarter). In the fourth quarter, Kingmax expects a noticeable increase in demand for DDR2-667, however, the share of DDR2-533 is unlikely to fall below 85-90%. As for the aforementioned 2 GB DDR2-533 modules, they will use 512 Mbit (64×8) chips manufactured by Toshiba and Micron. Part of the chips (20-30%) the company receives in the form of uncut plates.
In the third quarter, the share of SO-DIMM DDR2 in Kingmax’s sales structure was 35%. In the fourth quarter, due to the seasonal adjustment in demand, the company expects the demand for modules intended for desktop PCs to increase, respectively, the share of SO-DIMM is likely to fall to 30%. Finally, the share of DDR2 memory in the third quarter was only 12%, although Kingmax expects that the ratio between DDR2 and DDR will change in favor of the former and its share will reach 20%.
As has been noted many times, including by us, the situation on the RAM market is such that in the absence of a shortage of DRAM, the demand for DDR2 memory remains at a low level, which is due, firstly, to the shortage of Intel chipsets, and, secondly, secondly, a large volume of production, which did not decrease after the transfer of part of the capacities to the production of flash memory. The large volume of production is partly due to the fact that this year most manufacturers completed the migration to 90nm standards, providing higher performance compared to 130 and 110nm standards.
