Everything except HD DVD

This December, Matsushita expects to begin shipping trial samples of the chipset, which it claims is the first optical drive kit to support nearly all currently known writable and rewritable formats. Almost everything, as an exception is made for HD DVD. In other words, the complete list of supported media looks like this: BD-ROM, BD-R / RE, DVD ± R / RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, CD-R / RW, and CD-ROM.

This selectivity isn’t surprising, though, as Matsushita is a longtime supporter of the Blu-ray camp.

The set consists of two microcircuits: one of them is assigned to work with analog signals, drive and laser control; the second performs digital signal processing. The new product uses error correction technologies: Partial Response and Maximum Likelihood, which, according to the developer, should compensate for the effect of interference on the optical head.

The kit will be available in two versions: with ATAPI and Serial ATA interfaces. Mass production of microcircuits may begin as early as January 2021.
