New budget chipsets from Intel – in the second quarter

Intel will release its 946GZ and 946PL chipsets in the second quarter of 2021, which will replace the existing 945GZ and 945PL in the budget sector. Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers will try to sell as much as possible the already manufactured products on the Intel 945GZ and 945PL chipsets during this quarter.

In light of the upcoming release of the product line of Intel processors based on the Conroe core, the phasing out of the production of motherboards based on the 945/955 series chipsets looks logical, since the new processors are not supported by them. Thus, Intel will complete the transition to the Broadwater family of system chipsets, which also includes the P965 / G965 chipsets (for mid-range solutions) and 975X (high-performance systems).

Motherboards equipped with the Broadwater chipset will support both existing Intel Smithfield and Presler processors ranging from 2.8GHz to 3.6GHz, as well as the new Conroe starting at 2GHz.
