STLC4420 and STLC4550: compact and cost-effective WLAN modules from ST

The problem of power consumption of wireless network modules, for the first time quite elegantly solved by Philips, finds a solution in the products of other manufacturers, in particular, STMicroelectronics, which presented the STLC4420. STLC4420 supports IEEE802.11a / b / g, which implies operation in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Another novelty presented, STLC4550, supports IEEE802.11b / g and functionally complements the previously presented STLC4370. New items are positioned for use in mobile phones and pocket PCs, as well as laptops and UMPs.

STLC4420 uses OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and CCK (Complementary Code Keying) technologies, and the power consumption in sleep mode is no more than 30 μW. The solution includes a MAC (Media Access Controller) -controller on the ARM9 core, a digital processor of the basic logic and a ZIF (Zero IF) transceiver.

STLC4550, although lacking IEEE802 support.11a, has small dimensions (8.5x8x1.4 mm) and even less power consumption.

Both STLC4420 and STLC4550 provide WLAN compatibility with Bluetooth using PTA (Packet Traffic Arbitration) algorithm. Device interface: SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) or SDIO (Secure Digital I / O). The choice between interfaces is made by setting the appropriate mode. Clock frequency is 19.2, 26, 38.4 or 40 MHz.

STLC4420 and STLC4550 are currently available as trial samples. The cost of modules in bulk quantities will be $ 9 and $ 8.5, respectively.
