Panda Software: Virus & Intrusion Weekly Report (44 week 2021)
Panda Software has prepared a new report that examines four versions of the Mitglieder Trojan (FK, FL, FN, and FM) that spread en masse by email this week and caused massive infections of computers in many countries of the world, as well as the Bagle worm.FN.
According to Panda ActiveScan, Panda Software’s free online antivirus, the four versions of Mitglieder mentioned above are the most frequently detected threats worldwide. The first released version -FK- is distributed in emails with an empty header and text containing the words “Texte” or “Info”. The message contains an attached file with the extension .zip (For example: Health_and_knowledge, Sms_txt, Max, Business, The_new_price, Info_prices or Business_dealing). The archive contains .EXE file that, when launched, installs Mitglieder on the computer.FK.
The Mitglieder FK, FL and FN versions share the following features:
- Once installed on the computer, they try to download the file from various web pages using a PHP script. After downloading, they save it – using an arbitrary number as the file name – in the EXEFLD subfolder of the Windows directory, and then launch it.
- Then the Trojan creates the file HLOADER_EXE.EXE is a copy of the Trojan itself, which in turn generates the HLEADER_DLL file.DLL the next time you start your computer. It is embedded in the EXPLORER process.EXE and is responsible for executing the actions of the Trojan.
The computers infected with Mitglieder FM are blocked from accessing certain web pages, in particular those belonging to antivirus companies; system services related to several antivirus and security products are disabled; Windows registry editing utilities are removed.
Bagle.FN – a worm that sends a copy of the Mitglieder Trojan.FK to all addresses collected on the infected computer.
Bagle.FN is distributed in an email that tries to trick users into believing that the attached file is a program, image, etc.d. It also spreads over the Internet by attacking IP addresses (which it obtains by an arbitrary method or from the network of an infected computer) by exploiting a security hole or through an open port.
Bagle.FN tries to download several files from various sites to run them on the computer and removes entries from the Windows registry that belong to other malware samples.
