The reason for the “freezes” and freezes of the GeForce 7900 GTX

The problem of short freezes (so-called “freezes”) and freezes for some time (from 10 to 60 seconds) of the picture is discussed by the owners of many GeForce 7900 GTX video cards. Now, about a month after the release of these video cards on the market, NVIDIA finally decided to react to the situation and give its explanations on this matter.

As our colleagues from the PC Perspective website found out, this problem mainly affects the owners of cards overclocked by the factory or by the users themselves. Recall that the pixel processors of the video card operate at 650 MHz and the vertex processors – at 700 MHz. It is the last frequency, in conjunction with a memory controller operating at 800 MHz, that, at the slightest increase, can cause the incidents described above. Cases were noted with increasing frequencies even by only 20 MHz. Among the cards suffering from such defects, the products of eVGA, BFG and XFX companies are most often mentioned, which does not exclude their (defects) manifestations on accelerators of other manufacturers.

This situation is mainly caused by the desire of vendors to saturate the market with flagship video cards as soon as possible, to “skim the cream” during the first sales, making their products stand out among competitors by the fact that they are at least a few megahertz, but faster. At the same time, even the presence of a cooling system of its own improved design is not the final solution to the problem – it’s not about the temperature, but about the fact that the frequency limit of individual core blocks has been reached.

NVIDIA commented on defective cards, stating that each specific case must be recognized as a warranty, and the problem must be corrected by the seller. In the future, the company promises that the cards will be guaranteed to work at the frequencies set by the vendor, for which a stricter control system is being introduced.

Thus, if you are faced with a similar problem on your GeForce 7900 GTX video card, then you have good reason to demand that the seller replace it with one that is guaranteed to work at its own frequencies.
