HP asks to pull up Blu-ray Disc to HD-DVD level

As you know, HP, the world’s second largest personal computer manufacturer, has supported Blu-ray Disc as a next generation optical media.

Nevertheless, the actions of other major participants in the “battle of formats” – Microsoft and Intel, who took the side of HD-DVD, made HP once again carefully consider its choice. As a result, the company sent a formal request to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) to add two important technologies to the format.

According to HP, support for Managed Copy and iHD technologies should be part of the specification. Both of them are already in the HD-DVD format, which, in particular, was named as one of the arguments in favor of Microsoft’s support for this format.

As stated in the official press release issued on this occasion, “HP has determined that Managed Copy and iHD will ensure that fundamental technical needs are met.”. Paraphrasing, we can come to the conclusion that Blu-ray in its current state, alas, is not at all able, I apologize for the pun, to meet the basic requirements for a new generation format.

What is it all the same?

Managed Copy – unlike what we have in the case of DVD, this feature will allow consumers to make legal copies of high-definition recordings located on an optical disc. Such a feature is indispensable in the digital home – so that the media server can read and transmit the contents of the disk over the network for viewing.

iHD – this designation covers extensions to the standard that will provide consumers with rich opportunities for interactive interaction with the contents of the disc: in the navigation, viewing and additional functionality of HD recordings. Recall that Microsoft intends to implement iHD support in the Windows Vista operating system.

Well, maybe manufacturers will be able to bring their designs to a “common denominator”, and users will be spared the need to choose between formats?
