HCL licenses PowerPC processors from IBM

India-based HCL Technologies announced an agreement with IBM to use and sublicense the PowerPC 405 and PowerPC 440 embedded microprocessor cores, as well as selected peripheral cores. HCL intends to use this agreement to establish itself as the first independent development center for Power Architecture solutions. The company expects to expand its use of IBM processors in applications such as networking, wireless devices and consumer electronics products.

As you know, HCL specializes in system solutions, including the development of very large integrated circuits (VLSI) and hardware designed for various industries: telecommunications, consumer electronics, data storage systems. Following its chosen specialization, HCL will be able to offer original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) a wide range of SoC solutions using the core architecture of the IBM PowerPC 405 and PowerPC 440 microprocessors.

The range of offerings is expected to cover off-the-shelf designs, Open SystemC models, prototyping and integration design services, software development. HCL also intends to provide customers with access to high-performance edge cores equipped with CoreConnect, an open architecture system bus developed by IBM.
