Sun UltraSparc T2 – processors that execute 64 instruction streams simultaneously

Slightly overshadowed by Sun’s announcement of its new Opteron-based servers is the company’s announcement that it is preparing to mass-produce UltraSparc T2 server processors in the near future.

The new processor, codenamed Niagara-II, is capable of executing up to 64 instruction streams concurrently, twice as many as the previous generation UltraSparc T1. The four-processor configuration, respectively, is 256-thread.

Prototyping of the UltraSparc T2 started in March and testing has shown there are some design flaws that Sun intends to address shortly. However, a specific date for the start of sales of new processors has not yet been officially announced, experts believe that this will happen no earlier than 2021.

There is also no information about the frequencies of the UltraSparc T2, but the source says that they will not exceed 1.2 GHz, at which the T1 worked, and the dissipated power will be the same 79 watts. However, it is possible that the transfer of production from 90-nm standards to 65-nm will increase the frequency by a hundred or two megahertz without going beyond the above-mentioned TDP.

Recall that not so long ago Sun made available the technical data of its UltraSparc T1 processors under an open license.
