Canon to develop fuel cells for printers and cameras
Canon intends to develop miniature fuel cells, which it plans to replace traditional batteries in some of the Japanese manufacturer’s digital cameras and printers in the next three years.
Thus, Canon joins a group of companies that have already begun work in this direction. Major manufacturers such as Toshiba, NEC and Hitachi are already developing commercial prototypes of fuel cells for use in next-generation consumer electronics.
Canon’s aspiration to master a new direction is understandable – as one of the leaders in the global copiers and cameras market, the company is actively investing in new product development, as the digital camera market is entering a period of slowdown and competition in the printer and copier markets is extremely high.
In addition, the development of fuel cells is consistent with plans to reduce production costs and the desire to produce as many key product components in-house as possible. In this regard, it can be noted that Canon is also developing proprietary OLEDs to replace LCDs that the company is currently purchasing from other manufacturers for use in its cameras and printers.
