Learn more about AMD Socket M2 processors

As you know, AMD plans to announce a new Socket M2 platform next year. All processors will switch to the new socket, except for the Opteron 200 and 800 series, so the details of the new platform are of great interest. Some details have appeared on the HKEPC website to partially satisfy curiosity about Socket M2 processors.

In particular, if you believe the source, the dual-core Athlon 64X2 5000+ will be equipped with 1 MB of L2 cache. Support for dual channel DDR2-667 memory will appear. It is interesting that the real frequency at which the core operates – 2667 MHz – will be obtained by multiplying the clock generator frequency by 8 – 333 MHz. Recall that at the moment AMD processors are clocked by a 200 MHz generator. This allows you to get the frequency of the HyperTransport bus 800 MHz (Socket 754, multiplied by 4) and 1 GHz (Socket 939, multiplied by 5). The use of a different frequency (333 MHz) in Socket M2 is probably dictated by the requirements for integrating a dual-channel DDR2-667 memory controller.

Thus, the frequency of the HyperTransport bus in the new processors will be the previous 1 GHz, but now it will be obtained as a result of multiplying 333 x 3 MHz, and not 200 x 5 MHz.

As for single-core processors for Socket S1 (Manila core), they will have support for DDR2-667 memory, but single-channel. Unlike desktop processors, they will not use Presidio security and Pacifica virtualization.
