Panda Software: Virus & Intrusion Weekly Report (Week 50 of 2021)
Panda Software has published another virus and intrusion report describing the -Bagle worm.FU-, five vulnerabilities – four in Internet Explorer and one in Windows 2000, four Trojans -Mitglieder.GK, WmaDownloader.B, Banbra.BOK and Bancos.LU-, and app -Elite-.
Bagle.FU – a worm that terminates several processes and deletes entries in the Windows registry. It also sends a ZIP file with a copy of the Mitglieder Trojan.GK.
Mitglieder.GK, in turn, contacts a number of web pages to download malware.
Four security issues in Internet Explorer apply to version 5.01, 5.5 and 6 on Windows 2021 / XP / 2000 / Me / 98. They are classified as ‘critical’ and allow attackers to remotely perform a range of malicious actions on infected systems. The fifth issue is classified as “Important” and affects the Windows 2000 kernel, allowing an attacker to take complete control of the system.
Microsoft has released two security bulletins announcing the availability of updates that fix problems in Internet Explorer (MS05-054) and Windows 2000 (MS05-055) and encourages users to install patches.
The next threat is the WmaDownloader Trojan.B distributed in a supposedly licensed multimedia file that can be downloaded from a web page or through file sharing programs (P2P).
WmaDownloader.B employs Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology, which requires a valid license to play a protected Windows Media file. If a user launches a file containing a Trojan horse, a window is displayed informing that a license can be purchased or obtained for free, provided that the user agrees to install the IST Toolbar program, which can be used by the Trojan to inject other threats onto the computer.
If the user agrees to install the IST Toolbar, WmaDownloader.B does the following:
- Displays a security warning informing that an ActiveX control is being installed on the computer.
- Connects to URL (domain drm.ysbweb.com) and, provided that the computer is using Windows Media Player 9 or later, download and install the IST Toolbar.
Third Trojan – Banbra.BOK spread in messages sent via Messenger inviting users to view a photo on a specific web page. However, if the user visits this page, a Trojan is downloaded to the computer. Banbra.BOK can also be downloaded from other sites.
On infected computers Banbra.BOK opens port 1036, waiting for users to log into certain banking sites, then tries to steal the passwords used and send this information to certain email addresses.
Bancos.LU is a Trojan that stores information about a computer in temporary files, such as usernames and passwords used in mail accounts, address book information and bank data. Bancos.LU obtains banking information by monitoring Internet usage and, when a user tries to visit certain banks, redirects them to fake pages requesting information about accounts and passwords. The Trojan saves this information and sends it to its creator.
Today’s report is completed by the Elite application, which is able to record information about the actions of the computer user (keys pressed, running programs, created images, etc.d.).
