LSI Logic has a SAS switch ready

LSI Logic, a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) -based NAS solution, has unveiled its first prototype SAS switches to enable low-cost, high-performance storage networking. As SAS gains popularity in Direct Attached Storage (DAS) and rack-mountable networking, LSI is expected to find its way into server switching with multiple SAS storage.

By adding a SAS switch to the product portfolio, LSI takes SAS infrastructure to the next level. It provides full interoperability between all members of the LSI SAS family of controllers, expanders, and motherboard RAID tools.

Nine SAS x4 ports included in switch layout. Zoning support will enable users to combine multiple switches to form storage domains. Copper cabling is said to allow the switch to be placed up to 8 meters from storage. As a result, a wide range of options for using the new product becomes available: from a solution at the level of a workgroup or a rack server, to server rooms with dozens of servers switched with one or more SAS storages.

The switch is configured using the embedded web server. At the physical level, the switch supports SAS and Serial ATA (SATA) drives.

The date of the start of serial production and the price of the product have not yet been announced.
