It is quite possible that the usual antennas in the form of metal “whiskers” will soon remain in the past. This forecast allows us to make a message about the new material, the development of which was completed by the specialists of the University of Maryland. This material can form the basis for radio antennas that literally bend, but do not break. It is composed of iron and strontium nanoparticles.
The material resembles plastic composites in properties. In addition to the relatively long shortwave antennas, it is also ideal for replacing antennas operating in the higher frequency part of the spectrum, for example, those used in cell phones.
As scientists explain the principle of the novelty, as a result of the “mixing” process, a self-organizing polymer containing metal particles is obtained. The substance acquires magnetic and dielectric properties. Antennas of arbitrary shapes can be made from it. According to the researchers, the new material gives designers freedom, allowing them to hope for the emergence, in the words of one of the project participants, “a new generation of devices that will become lighter, smaller and more attractive in appearance, since now they do not have to build a protruding, brittle metal antenna”.
For example, in a cell phone it will be possible to get away from the antenna in its usual form – instead, it will be enough to make the body parts of the device from a new material. In addition to reducing the size, it will help improve signal reception, the researchers said.
The promising development is confirmed by the fact that the US Air Force allocated $ 367,000 for further research.
