NFC at 3GSM World Congress: discreet but very useful!
This week in Barcelona hosted the international 3GSM World Congress, which was attended by almost all large and not so vendors of mobile phones and infrastructure equipment. We have already mentioned many of them in one way or another, but one detail of the past event is worthy of a separate story. It will be about the technology of “near-field communications” (NFC or near-field communications), for the demonstration of which the congress platform was used and in which all visitors became involuntary participants.
With the backing of the congress organizers, Philips Semiconductors equipped the lapel business cards with a passive NFC chip and agreed that Samsung would ship a certain number of NFC-enabled phones by the start of the congress, before the official market launch. As a result, to enter the halls of the congress, it was enough to bring your card to the reader, and those who managed to acquire a Samsung device could write down contact information from business cards by holding them a few centimeters away.
NFC devices can operate in one of two modes – active or passive. In active mode, the device itself creates an electric field (carrier frequency – 13.56 MHz), in passive mode – modulates the load for data transmission. As you can imagine, and this is written in the specifications, at least one device must be in active mode.
Samsung is not the first vendor to come forward with NFC support: last year Nokia introduced the Nokia 3220 to the market, however, there are a number of differences in the approaches of Samsung and Nokia. Unlike Nokia, which housed the electronics in a replaceable case, Samsung has integrated a sensor, cryptographic chip and microcontroller on the phone’s board. According to a Philips representative, this year NFC chips are expected to be integrated into a significant number of telephones, the range of which will continue to expand in the future. Considering that the 13.56 MHz frequency is used in the technologies of Philips Mifare and Sony FeliCa smart cards, work is underway to ensure the compatibility of these different (but only at first glance) technologies.
What matters for technology diffusion is how quickly NFC terminals become widely available. The recently mentioned project of introducing NFC as a service for paying for travel in the European Union, as well as a fairly wide range of proposals from Japanese companies: Panasonic, for example, at the congress demonstrated a soda vending machine that accepts payment via FeliCa and is compatible, by the way, with a Samsung NFC phone ; will have to contribute to this in the future.
In addition, negotiations are underway with the Bluetooth SIG to integrate NFC into the future generation of this most popular standard today and with the Wi-Fi Alliance, which already intends NFC as a technology to speed up the process of automatic configuration of a wireless Wi-Fi network.
