VCDHD – the new optical media
Recently, a presentation of a new flexible disk VCDHD (Versatile Compact Disc High Density), a joint development of the Ukrainian company “Rostok CD”, the Russian company “Antrop-Studio” and the Dutch company VDL ODMS, took place in Kiev.
The author of the invention is the Russian producer, general director of “Antrop-studio” Andrey Tropilo. VCDHD is a new optical media that combines the positive features of traditional DVDs and CDs while avoiding most of their disadvantages. Compared to traditional optical storage media, VCDHD has a number of advantages:
- Capacities comparable to single-sided DVD-5s up to 4.7GB.
- Flexibility achieved by reducing disc thickness to 0.6mm versus 1.2mm for traditional media.
- Compatibility with the vast majority of modern players, which has been proven by test tests in Russia and abroad, including VCDHD testing in Philips laboratories in Eindhoven (Netherlands).
- Resistance to mechanical and temperature deformations, as well as damage to the information zone, which is ensured due to the implementation of the carrier on the basis of one substrate, similar to CD, the absence of an adhesive layer typical for DVD, as well as due to the annular protrusions that protect the mirror surface of the disc from scratches.
- Reduction of errors at the beginning of the information zone, which is ensured by the peculiarities of the disk geometry.
- Improved manufacturability, which is achieved due to a significant reduction in polycarbonate required for casting one disc, as well as the use of a special varnish that protects the discs from warping and deformation during their manufacture, which in total reduces the production cycle of one disc. At the same time, the rejection rate is reduced to less than 1% versus 5-10% for traditional carriers.
- The adaptability of technology, which allows you to convert lines for the production of traditional media for the production of VCDHD at a relatively low cost.
In addition, VCDHD is already adapted to use new technologies for recording and reading information, including using a blue laser (Blue Laser Technologies). At the same time, the VCDHD capacity increases to 15 GB.
The characteristics of VCDHD allow it to be used for both data storage and as a media carrier. Due to the high production speed of a single VCDHD disc, as well as its flexibility, VCDHD can be successfully used as interactive applications for newspapers and magazines.
I would like to note that DVDs made using CD technology are good only for their cheapness. Apparently, the matter will be limited to using VCDHD as tabs in logs. And, although the new media is positioned as a way to reduce the cost of licensed discs, you can expect a new pirated “format”, because they are so fond of saving money on their customers…
