DVD + RW Dual Layer Discs Coming This Year

DVD + RW Alliance Approved DVD + RW Dual Layer Format Almost Two Years Ago. Philips recently released an addendum to the DVD + RW DL specification, and although it has not made any official announcements, there is information that the first media of this type should appear this year.

Unfortunately, the write speed for DVD + RW DL will be lower than that of DVD + R DL due to the higher power consumption of the process. The first discs will be recorded at 2.4x, and the 4x version will appear within a year. The specification also describes 8 cm media with the ability to write 2.66 GB of data. The biggest disappointment is that the first media will not be rewritable, since it is not yet possible to make all the necessary changes to the production technology for this.

The first (outer) recordable layer of DVD + RW DL must effectively absorb laser energy and at the same time be transparent enough so that the recording quality of the second layer does not suffer. By reducing the thickness of the outer layer, the second condition can be met, but the amount of absorbed energy becomes insufficient for writing and erasing.

In addition, discs must have a minimum reflectance of 18% to maintain compatibility with existing DVD drives, which is difficult to achieve, according to the source. Accordingly, in order for the old drive to still work with DVD + RW DL, you will need to update its firmware.

We only add that JVC has already announced the DVD-RW DL format, approved by the DVD Forum in February last year.
